DEF Derate: Why Your Truck Just Threatened You With 5 MPH

A light came on, then a message, then a countdown โ€” and now your 500-horsepower truck is promising to become a parade float. DEF derates are the modern breakdown: nothing's broken the old-fashioned way, but the computer has taken a hostage. Here's how the system works, what actually triggers it, and how to get your speed back.

Your truck injects DEF (diesel exhaust fluid โ€” urea and deionized water) into the exhaust, where the SCR catalyst uses it to convert NOx into harmless nitrogen and water. The EPA requires the truck to prove this is happening at all times.
